EU Regulation 2021/468 introduced monitoring of botanical species containing hydroxyanthracene derivatives (HADs), amending Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006. It places traditional senna extracts under increasing regulatory scrutiny.
The MinSan Circular dated 14/04/2021 requires analytical determination of HAD levels, establishing a threshold value of <1 ppm for emodin, <1 ppm for aloe-emodin, and <1 ppm for the sum of Aloin A and Aloin B as a test of the presence of these substances in food preparations with physiological or nutritional functionality.
